Item girl-turned actress Priyanka Kothari aka Nisha Kothari celebrated her birthday on November 30. We take a look at her short and sweet filmi journey.

Earlier this pretty lady was known as Nisha Kothari, but changing her name to Priyanka Kothari hasn't help her much.

She is yet to deliver her first hit in Bollywood.

Not many people know that item girl Priyanka Kothari is a graduate in Chemistry honours.

Born in Kolkata, she can fluently speak English, Gujrati, Bengali and Hindi.

Her family moved to New Delhi when she was in tenth standard. Priyanka later did her graduation from Delhi Univerty.

Soon after finishing college Priyanka Kothari turned to modelling.

Priyanka Kothari grabbed eyaballs for her item song Chadhti Jawani. This remix video became a huge hit and so did Priyanka Kothari.

The girl made her foray into acting with a Tamil movie Jay Jay in 2003.

Apparently, it was actor R Madhavan who liked her pictures and recommended her for the role.

Priyanka Kothari got her big break in Bollywood when Ram Gopal Varma approached her to do an item number in his movie Sarkar.

Ramu got smitten by her charm and went on to sign her as the lead the movie James. But sadly, the movie bombed at the box office.

After Ramu, the Bhatts came knocking on her door with their next thriller The Killer. Priyanka was paired opposite Emraan Hashmi. The movie also had Irrfan Khan playing on of the lead characters.

When Ramu signed her again for his next venture Shiva, she was being touted as his next muse. This movie too failed to make a mark at the box office.

But that didn't stop Ramu from signing her to play Basanti in his remake of the superhit movie Sholay.

Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag had actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Mohanlal and Ajay Devgan playing important roles. His original muse Urmila Matondkar too did an item number in the movie. But this movie was the biggest disasters of 2007. Sadly, Priyanka Kothari's luck just didn't seem to support her.

But Ramu was always there for to support the lady. The actress was again seen as the main lead in his movie Go

When Go too bombed at teh box office, Priyanka was forced to return back to the South.

Almost after a break of one year, Priyanka returned to Bollywood with yet another Ram Gopal Varma flick Agyaat.

Apparently, she will also be seen in the sequel of the movie tentatively titled Agyaat - 2, which is set to release in 2010.

The sexy siren was also seen in the Fardeen Khan, Esha Deol starrer Darling. She sizzled in the item number Aa Khushi Se Khudkushi Kar Le

The sultry actress definitely needs to move and sign some good movies in case she is serious about making it big in Bollywood.

But who knows she too decides to follow the footsteps of Rakhi Sawant, and decides to appear in some reality show on television.

Not the one to shy away from showing some skin on the screen, she has appeared in a number of sizzling songs in many films.

Ramu's earlier muse Urmila Matondkar has almost faded away. We hope that Priyanka doesn't go Urmila's way.

Sari gets a sexy makeover

India's traditional six-yard wonder is igniting imaginations anew. The sari, say fashion designers, can be worn over a pair of jeans or jazzed up with a sexy slim belt for a trendy look. Designers like Tarun Tahiliani and Nida Mahmood showcased the sari in new avatars at the recently concluded Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) here. What's more, young girls are all for these innovative styles.

Kanika Rastogi, 19, says she was resisting the idea of wearing a sari for her sister's wedding for the fear of looking older until she saw models flaunting Tahiliani's saris with a belt. "I would never have thought of wearing a sari for my sister's wedding. I didn't want to look old. But when I saw models wearing saris with belts, I thought it would make me look really cool. So that's just what I am going to do now - save money by not buying an expensive lehenga and wear a sari stylishly instead," Rastogi told IANS.

When asked about his innovative accessorising of the traditional outfit, Tahiliani said: "Belts can be used over saris by slim and tall people. It accentuates the waist, looks sexy and adds style as well as youthfulness to the outfit."

The designer, who is making Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty's wedding trousseau, says adding a silver or gold belt - a modern alternative to the good old 'kamarbandh' - over a sari also gives a Greek look to the attire. "The Indian and Greek styles of dressing are all about draping - and very similar. They usually wear waist bands over gowns so these belts work to add that extra bit of Indo-Western look to a sari," he said.

Young designer Nida Mahmood says it's the coolest thing to wear saris over jeans - a fashion statement she herself made at WIFW. "The idea of wearing saris over jeans is my interpretation of wearing a sari in a trendy manner. This is a trend that youngsters can follow for any casual party. It looks very good, especially if you are carrying the outfit with the right accessories and look," Mahmood told IANS.

Others like Jai-Parvesh and Hemant-Nandita also have suggestions to make. Both designer duos swear by pre-pleated and lehenga saris, which are easy to wear and carry at the same time. While pre-pleated saris are like skirts with pleats stitched on to them, lehenga saris have a flowing silhouette (kali) below, and has a heavy pallu replacing a well-draped dupatta on the left shoulder. Said Jai: "Young girls look for easy attires these days. With something like a pre-pleated sari or a lehenga sari, one doesn't need to be bothered about pleating a sari. You just have to slip in or tuck it at one place. That's what is attracting a lot of girls these days."

Twenty six-year-old Sonakshi Sharma seconded the idea. She said, "Who has the time and patience to visit a parlour each time before going to a wedding just to get a sari draped? So these sort of attires work well. Just wear it as if you are wearing a skirt - and you look decked up without much ado!"
