Nature constantly offers visions of beauty, whether it is a flower on the side of the road, deer frolicing in a field at Cades Cove or a breathtaking sunrise or sunset on the Great Smoky Mountains.
For our second and final Grand Canyon sunrise we assembled at my favorite Grand Canyon photo location, Desert View, about 30 minutes before the sun's scheduled appearance. Here the canyon's plunge toward the Colorado River is less precipitous than other view points, s a photographer weaned on the no less breathtaking but far more finite confines of Yosemite, transitioning to photographing the Grand Canyon shattered a long-established template for success.

However, I am going to try to give you a visual and written sample of what I saw on this particular trip and hope that it inspires you go to there someday if you haven't had the chance. This is only part one of multiple posts. I thought the best thing to do was to start off with a post on Sydney Harbour at sunrise. I love to be out on the water and the bay around this city is absolutely breathtaking, no matter what time of the day you're viewing it.
While on Vacation this October something different happened one morning that made this sunrise over Clingman's Dome a sunrise to remember. It wasn't the location, although it was breathtaking; or the clouds, although they were beautiful. The rule of thumb is to use a tripod if the shutter speed is slower than the reciprocal of the focal length. as an example if you are shooting at 100 mm then you can hand-hold up to 1/125 sec shutter speed.
The opportunity to see the sunrise is there for all of us, but we do it so rarely. On the 2nd October, that's exactly what I did though, and it was so rewarding. We travelled west out of Lone Pine, a town where hundreds of Westerns were filmed ... Sorry no photos of it (signs inside forbid you from taking photos!) but if you're in Bishop GO THERE, its great! A few minutes after the shot above, the sun hid beneath the horizon, but the sky above us was still breathtaking.
This is why shooting just after sunrise and just before sunset, will provide just the right kind of lighting and shadows, which in turn makes for a beautiful photographic opportunity because of the breath taking natural colors the sky has to offer.
