President’s Day style, part 2 – President John F. Kennedy

Posted: 21 Feb 2011 03:59 PM PST

For the second installment in our Presidential steeze, I want to highlight the man who has been considered pretty much the epitome of New England prep and classical style. The one, the only John F. Kennedy.

John F. Kennedy has one of the most well-known American quotes, stating “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for you country.” There’s a lesser known quote of his (but just as important) that I feel is unjustly forgotten. It says, “Ask not what you can do for your President, but how you can bite his style for years to come.”

Or something like that (Editor’s Note: This is not an actual quote).

JFK was the youngest man elected President ever, he was the youngest to die in office, and he was the first Roman Catholic President. The man broke the Presidential mold when he elected by the people, for the people. While it can be argued he made a few missteps in foreign policy early in his term, he led the United States onto the path of equal rights and attempted to create a broader sense of world peace.

The one thing JFK never faltered on was his quintessential New England prep style. The man is the epitome of that Ivy Style, characterized by button-down collar shirts, chinos, and boat shoes. His laid back elegance is something prep purists have been emulating and imitating for decades. Now, I know that not everyone is going to be heading up to Martha’s Vineyard and going sailing on the yacht with Muffy. But what you can take from his style is how to look well put together even in the most laid back of situations (like BBQs, tailgates, summer parties, and booze cruises). I’ve put together the simplest of outfits below for you. Versatility is key, you can throw a cardigan or un-lined cotton sportcoat on top to dress it up or untuck the shirt to stay super casual. If it’s good for JFK, it’s good for me (and you). Afterwards, check out a few more pictures of JFK for your sartorial inspiration. My favorite is the one of his at Harvard, sporting the double breasted blazer.

Lands’ End Tailored Fit No Iron Oxford Shirt - $39.50

For the money, you really won’t find a better fitting and affordable brand for the essentials (other than maybe L.L. Bean).

Dockers SF Tapered Khaki – $75 (but check out your local Macy’s, they’re ALWAYS on sale)

Dockers is a massive rebranding mission right now, they’re no longer your Dad’s chinos. Look for a post on them soon.

Sperry Authentic Original Boat Shoes – $75 (if you want something a bit more dressy, check the brown buc)

Sperrys are my go-to shoe of choice during the summer. I’ve beat mine to hell over the last couple years. Super comfortable and durable for any type of weather. Not to mention, they look good with just about anything.

But if the Sperrys are just a bit too much Prep too soon, go for the Clarks Wallabees, Sand Suede – $125

Yet another QB trick shot video

Posted: 21 Feb 2011 02:49 PM PST

They always say imitation is the highest form of flattery, so Johnny McEntee, be thankful that there are others looking up to you. If you don’t remember, McEntee is the backup quarterback from UConn who set the internet on fire with his trick shot video.

And now, meet Alex Tanney of the Monmouth College Fighting Scots who has done a video of his own.

Sperm donation seems way more awesome in Australia

This homepage soliciting sperm donors for Australia makes sperm donation so in my face that I can hardly see. Hooray, wordplay!

Personally, I’m never that elated when I’m done squeezing one out. If I were on that homepage, it’d be a slideshow of me wiping my hands on my pants, looking down disgusted, then passing out asleep. But hey, Australia’s the Paris of self-love, I guess.

How to punish your kids for their inevitably crappy grades

Posted: 21 Feb 2011 01:30 PM PST

Screen shot 2011 02 21 at 3.21.11 PM How to punish your kids for their inevitably crappy gradesTrue story: the four dudes that lived in my freshman dorm suite combined for a 2.5 GPA. (Yes, like added together, that’s what we got.) And that was after one guy made a 1.5 no less.

If my father had heard of the idea way back in 1999, he no doubt would have done the same thing Ronda Holder made her son, James Mond, III, do recently — walk around on a street corner with a sign reading, “GPA 1.22 … honk if I need eduction.”

(Which could lead us to true story No. 2 which involves me having to go to church in a Spider Man onesie … at the age of 10. Thanks, dad.)

Even though giving traffic to Fox News is probably like stabbing a flower in the face or something, it’s worth it to go check out the video in which James gets ridiculed not just by his mother, but by the local news.

He walks around a street corner wearing this sign — lettering could be bigger and the message more succinct in my opinion, but that’s splitting hairs — while being mocked by an entire community of people who recognized him as the local ne’er-do-well and decided to stop and make fun of him while he hangs his head in shame.

Naturally, someone complains about this — experts are apparently criticizing the move as “humiliating and ineffective” and reported her to child services. These are probably the same type of people that believe the unemployment system in this country is working.

Personally, I think Holder makes a great point — you can take away a kid’s phone, you can take away his car, you can take away his allowance, but until you completely strip him of his dignity through public embarrassment, there’s no guarantee that he’s going to actually take anything seriously.

I can promise you I never wore pajamas past 11:30 on a Sunday again until I moved out of my parents’ house.
